Last week I got to take my brother backpacking for the first time and we went down to Southern Virginia to hike a section of the Appalachian Trail. We parked at Elk Garden Trailhead around 4:00 pm and hiked south on the AT to Buzzard Rock. To Buzzard Rock is about 3.3 miles and you hike under Whitetop Mountain to get there. If you wanted extra views you could easily hike up to the top of Whitetop too. After hiking out to Buzzard Rock we doubled back and hiked back to a campsite that's right off the AT under Whitetop Mountain. From here we went up to a big clearing on the mountain, made some dinner and watched a beautiful sunset. I got to teach him how to pack a backpack, how to use a backpacking stove, how to set up the tent, etc. It was so much fun! In the morning we had every intention of hiking out to the top of Elk Garden but we completely forgot in our excitement to get over to the Grayson Highlands. Next time we'll be sure to check out Elk Garden as well. I'm pretty positive my brother had a ton of fun and he says he can't wait to go again!!
