Hi all! Happy Monday-  I am currently out hiking to a waterfall and watching the sunset on the BRP! (This post was scheduled) I'm super excited to be hiking to this waterfall and can't wait to put up more detailed directions and pictures - for those of you reading from Charlottesville it's going to be super close to you. Anyways.....

To end our long weekend down on the border of NC/TN we decided to drive a portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway, stop at some outlooks and hike to Rough Ridge. A couple we met while backpacking suggested this hike since it's quick and easy and it was the perfect suggestion. We woke up early and left the hostel, grabbed some gas station coffee and we were on our way. We parked in the Rough Ridge Overlook parking lot at MP 302.8. There's a little waterfall/rock slide right beside the parking lot! From here we started up the trail on the right side of the lot. You'll climb a few steps then quickly come to an intersection with a sign- take a left on the Tanawha Trail. You'll immediately cross a wooden bridge that takes you over a little cascade before climbing a few hundred feet. You'll come out of the trees and begin climbing a wooden walkway. Please stay on the walkway, it was constructed to protect the fragile vegetation on top of the mountain :) For more information on the hike go here.

The southern Appalachian Mountains have completely (re)stolen my heart! It's been quite a while since I've been down in that area- maybe 10 to 12 years? So I'm so happy that I finally made the trip back down there. I wish I lived just an hour or two closer but it really isn't too bad of a drive from Richmond. I'm in the process of picking out some camping/backpacking/hiking locations along the east coast for long weekend trips next year. I've gotten a few emails recently with suggestions for places to visit on the east coast and I am so grateful for each and every suggestion! I think we've nailed down our summer vacation which I'm so excited about but any suggestions for longer trips are appreciated!
